Mind Expanding Subcultures

Somewhere I read or someone told me that if you learn a musical instrument as an adult you keep your mind sharp. Maybe I just made it up to give me an excuse. Even though I'm a crossword addict (though I'm down to one a day), I have been feeling the need for some sort of creative outlet but I wanted something fun and hopefully easy. I found the fun part but I'm having trouble with the easy part. To clear the fog of mystery, I have purchased a shiny new Ukulele and have begun teaching myself how to contort my grubby paws to eke out a C chord.

So as I try to strum out a song with my instrument that I have a funny suspicion is woefully out of tune (I have a pitch pipe but all the strings sound the same to me so it might be hopeless), I naturally turn to the web for support. And I'm sure latent readers will be surprised to find that there is a whole ukulele world out there ready to opine, teach, perform and chat about all things ukulele. You might think of Hawaii when you think of the ukulele and for the most part you'd be right but there are a whole bunch of people out there strumming. If you are thinking that there is no way for this to be remotely cool, you are probably right but at least we can pretend.

That's one punk rockin' cover version. Who knew ukuleles could be so cool.

Glad to have you back S-2. On the cool tip, I think I'd take it the other direction and go the 20s raccoon jacket--strumming and singing Cole Porter tunes direction.
