Compliments

I've never been one to take compliments well. I nod and smile and whisper a "thank you", all the while thinking "what a crock of shit". I'm a skeptic and suspect most compliments are intended to fog my brain so I'll forgive a transgression or agree to something I shouldn't. Someone telling me I'm beautiful most likely thinks I don't hear it very often and will melt into swoons immediately. Dream on.

In the bar business, compliments are most commonly related to the drinks you make. If they're balanced and fresh and strong, you're a goddess. If they are too weak, you're admonished and encouraged to add a bit more booze. Once you do (if you do) you're the best bartender ever. I use my own discretion and charge accordingly. And of course, in bars folks like to drink, and to drunks or tipsy guys you look especially cute. I've heard "desirable" and "sexy" and all sorts of nonsense. You're drinking. Margaret Thatcher would look cute to you right now.
But, recently I received a sort of compliment/non-compliment. Still not sure how to take it. Yes, he'd had a couple of beers but he was lucid. He asked my name and told me exactly who I look like. Mr. Peabody. Who? You know, from "Rocky and Bullwinkle", Mr. Peabody and His Boy Sherman. They traveled through time and all. You look just like Mr. Peabody.

Yes, Mr. Peabody is the dog. But he was the smart one.

I meant it then and I mean it now.

It was the bowtie that gave you away.

I don't know...I think you're more of a Sherman.

Were you wearing only a bow-tie at the time?

Now that's definitely not a compliment. Sherman was the pet in the relationship. It was a role reversal -- "His Boy Sherman". He was the lackey who always messed things up. I'm thinking I was likened to Mr. Peabody not only because of the glasses but for my penchant for rolling my eyes.

I have never worn a bow-tie. Except in jazz band in high school -- and I was forced to then.

You were in band?
