Man, that was some speech last night at the DNC. Normally, I would have missed it entirely, since, y'know, I tend to try and avoid that crap. But, randomlly flipping to NBC (who knew the DNC was on the Peacock?) I came early to Hillary Clinton's speech. At first I watched simply as a character study of Ms. Clinton, but as the speech went on, I was truly moved. Her repeated references to herself and her campaign carrying even more weight when she pulled it back over to Obama. When she challenged her still aggrieved supporters to answer the simple question: Was it the issues, or was it me? Was it the problems facing this country or was it a cult of personality? And then she exhorted the floor to stand with her and give their unconditional support to the Democratic Nominee for the Presidency. Classy and awesome.
Bonus points for the cut-away to Bill Clinton looking an awful lot like Phil Hartman doing a very sad Bill Clinton when Hillary was talking about a medical care-less woman with cancer and two autistic children. Wish I could find a clip of that. Oh, wait, I live in the 21st Century, with all media at my fingertips, so here's the youtube vidjah (fastforward to ~ 8:50)
Maybe her supporters can find some closure, let if fucking go and just stop all the madness. They backed the losing horse and now it's time to turn their attention to the bigger problem at hand. While I'm a registered independent, who hates both parties (just one a whole lot more than the other) and who prefers not to vote simply along party lines. I said it before when my peeps would ask me whom I preferred-- Clinton or Obama--and I'll say it again today: If the Democrats nominated an open can of Pepsi and a head of cabbage for the Presidency, I'd vote for it over whomever the Republicans threw up.

I had a similar experience when I flipped over to the DNC last night and caught Hillary Clinton joining her New York delegates. In an impeccably orchestrated moment she ended the vote count and heralded in the official nomination of Barack Obama. Kudos to Nancy Pelosi who called for the "nays" but immediately moved on before any stalwarts could even clear their throats. Clinton was classy and powerful and she did the right thing. But, god, everything is so pre-arranged, so wrapped up in a pretty bow. The smiles, the speeches, the tears. Who are these robots and do they really want to serve this nation or do they just desire the title and the power?
I don't know. I hate John McCain, wouldn't dream of voting for him or any Republican. I'll likely vote for Obama ... though I also am not enthusiastic. A can of Pepsi and a head of cabbage might do just as well. But, my candidate for the last few elections has been Ralph Nader. Why not vote for change again? Two parties who don't even allow a third party candidate in their debates ain't change. Sorry, Mr. Obama.
