Writers Walk

The Writer's Strike is a week on now and all the major news programs have focused on the grief this achievement has caused the tv viewers. Desperate Housewives has only a few episodes to air. Lost may go off air entirely until next season. 24, The Office and Two and A Half Men are also likely to be pulled. Late night shows like Leno and Letterman are repeats. Ellen DeGeneres has been bombarded with jeers for continuing to air her show daily. She's cut out the monologue as a bold demonstration of her support for the writers. That's love. The strike may last up to a year if the Studios and Producers don't give in to the modest demands of the struggling visionaries behind the two-page treatment. If you're hooked on tv or your favorite show is on the way out for an interminable season of nail-biting and over-eating, take heart -- reality shows are on the wax. Dancing with the Stars, Beauty and The Geek, Project Runway, Survivor et al are airing now and may continue for much longer than anticipated. Reality Shows are the Producers' golden nugget back-up plan. I caught the tail end of Amazing Race last night and confess I'm pulling for the goth duo. And thank goodness DJ Pegleg has cable or he'd be up the veritable creek. Though, come to think of it, writers for HBO, FX and Showtime are also on strike .... hmmmm. Does anyone still like to read?
Writer's Guild of America strikers protesting with nothing written on their signs ... proving their dedication without lifting a pen.

It is true that throughout history most of the great writers have died penniless. This is tradition and should be respected. Struggling to survive, living in squalor and failing to achieve a whisper of acclaim inspired the mavericks of literature to pen their greatest works. And yet some film school dropout working on Cavemen is picketing for more money. Who do they think they are? Well, it turns out the Writer's Guild is asking for pennies ... literally. SNL alum Tim Kazurinksi breaks it down in a clip which wouldn't upload for me from youtube. Maybe they are also on strike. It is right on so check out the link:

HA! Au contraire, mon frere: I'm actually loving the writer's strike. It means that I have a break in which to try and watch all the many, many shows that I've been stockpiling. Sure, I'll miss the Office and 30 Rock and Aliens in America and Life and Friday Night Lights, but--and this butt is as big as Rerun's--from what I hear the Wire is already in the can.

Plus I think the writers are entitled to $0.08 cents a dvd. Power to the Worker!
